Rosa Burkard

ROSA BURKARD has been a professional translator and consecutive / simultaneous interpreter since 1983. She has worked in the United States and Venezuela for numerous companies and organizations in both the public and private sectors including health and medicine, communications, media, law and consulting firms, the Venezuelan state-owned oil company Petróleos de Venezuela (PDVSA), the Carter Center, and multi-lateral organizations such as the World Confederation of Labour and Central Latinoamericana de Trabajadores.

From March, 2003 to September 2008, Rosa worked for Multilingual Services (MLS) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia, where she translated into Spanish health-related documents that are disseminated to the professional medical community and to the general public mainly through the “CDC en Español” website. She also interpreted at occasional conferences and seminars and was responsible for developing the CDC-MLS Health Glossary. She also participated actively in the development of health-related materials in Spanish, and was on the HIV English-Spanish Glossary Project team led by the Office of Minority Health Resource Center in Washington.

In her daily work, Rosa uses translation memory/terminology management software SDL TRADOS in Microsoft Word Environment.

Rosa is a Georgia Certified English–Spanish Court Interpreter and holds a Master’s Degree in Intercultural Communication from the Monterey Institute of International Studies in Monterey, California, a Master´s Degree in Terminology from Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona, Spain, and an undergraduate degree in Translation and Interpretation from Universidad Central de Venezuela in Caracas.

Rosa regularly attends continuing education events, the most recent ones being the International Terminology Summer School 2008 in Vienna, where she also presented a case study, and the 49th ATA Annual Conference in Orlando.

In addition, she is an instructor of Translation and Interpretation at Georgia State University in Atlanta, GA, and also taught at Universidad Central de Venezuela in Caracas, Venezuela. Rosa has been an invited speaker on topics of interest for translators and interpreters on numerous occasions.

Rosa was born in Italy and raised in Venezuela. She speaks Spanish (A - Native), English (B), Italian (C) and French (C).

Currently, Rosa is the President of the Atlanta Association of Interpreters and Translators (AAIT), an Active Member of the American Translators Association (ATA), and a member of Colegio Nacional de Traductores e Intérpretes (CONALTI) in Venezuela, where she has held the positions of President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer.
